Staying Cool in the Summer: Tips for Senior Living in Texas

Whether you’re up in the hills of Texas or at home in assisted living, it’s important to stay cool!

As temperatures rise during the summer months in Texas, especially here in Garland, it’s crucial for seniors to take extra precautions to stay cool and hydrated. Older adults are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses due to changes in their bodies and potential chronic health conditions. Here are some practical tips to help seniors in Garland beat the heat and enjoy a comfortable summer.

1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Dehydration can happen quickly in hot weather. Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, as they can lead to dehydration.

2. Wear Light Clothing: Choose lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing to help your body stay cool. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen are ideal as they allow your skin to breathe.

3. Stay Indoors During Peak Hours: Try to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you need to go outside, do so in the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler.

When I used to do outdoor training, we tried to stay indoors if it was over 85 degrees -- otherwise performance starts to suffer. As we approach the middle of summer here in Garland, be sure to check the temperature through the television or a weather app so you’re not going out in the extreme heat.

4. Use Fans and Air Conditioning: Ensure that your living space is well-ventilated. Use fans to circulate air and, if possible, spend more time in air-conditioned rooms.

5. Take Cool Showers or Baths: Taking a cool shower or bath can help lower your body temperature. You can also use a damp, cool cloth to wipe your face, neck, and arms for instant relief.

We usually think of hydration and staying cool in terms of drinking water, but it’s also important to keep your body cool. You can use cooling wipes or even just some ice to make sure your body stays cool.

6. Limit Physical Activity: Reduce strenuous activities and take frequent breaks if you need to be active. Listen to your body and rest if you start feeling overheated. No problem in taking an afternoon siesta when the sun’s at its highest.

By following these simple tips, seniors in Texas can enjoy a safe and comfortable summer. Remember, it’s essential to stay aware of how your body feels and seek medical attention if you experience symptoms of heat-related illnesses such as dizziness, nausea, or excessive sweating.
